About the 48/5 Film Competition

At the East Lansing Film Festival 48/5 Film Contests, filmmakers come together to write, shoot, edit, and premiere an original five-minute film in a mere 48 hours. The 48/5 contests draw an exciting array of talented teams, including amateurs, professionals, students, and local film fanatics.

At the start of the contests, teams are given three specific elements they must incorporate into their finished film. To add to the challenge, each teams draws a genre from a hat. Finished films that meet the deadline are judged on how well they incorporate these elements.

Team leaders may register online or in person the day of the contest. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Unregistered late teams will be disqualified. The winners will also be shown at the East Lansing Film Festival in the Fall.

2012 Winter 48/5 Contest, Feb 10-12

The East Lansing Film Festival's 48/5 contests draw an exciting array of talented teams, including amateurs, professionals, students, and local film fanatics.   Filmmakers come together to write, shoot, edit, and premiere an original five-minute film in a mere 48 hours. At the start of the contest, teams are given the same three elements (a prop, a CHARACTER and a line of dialogue) that they must incorporate into their finished film.  To add to the challenge, each team draws a genre from a hat. What judges look for most in the films is the creative incorporation of the given elements as well as a good story.

 

Team leaders may register online or in person the day of the contest. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged.  Pre-register online at http://www.elff.com.  Please pay via Paypal online or mail or drop off a check made payable to ELFF to:

Entry fees are as follows:
$50 through Wednesday, February 8

$75 after February 8 

 

The contest will begin with the distribution of elements, rules and regulations at 6:00 pm on Friday, February 10, at Beggar's Banquet, 218 Abbot Road, East Lansing, MI. Registrations will be accepted starting at 5:30pm. Teams must be registered by 6 pm. Unregistered late teams will be disqualified. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. 

 

Completed films on DVD must be handed in on Sunday, February 12, by 6pm

at Beggar's Banquet. The completed films will be shown on  

Monday, February 13 in Room 109, South Kedzie Hall, East Lansing at 7:00pm.  

 

Prizes will be awarded to the top three films as decided by a panel of qualified judges drawn from the area. 

 

First Prize: $100 

Second Prize: $50 

Third prize: $25


The top three films will be screened at the 15th Annual East Lansing Film Festival, November 7 - 15, 2012.

Fall 2011 48/5 Winners

Congratulations to all the teams who completed their 5 minute film in 48 hours.  The elements were: Prop-Bicycle, Line-"Really? Are you Serious?" and Character- Taylor Brown, Actor.  And the winners are...

2011 Fall 48/5 Contest October 7-9

 

The East Lansing Film Festival's 48/5 contests draw an exciting array of talented teams, including amateurs, professionals, students, and local film fanatics.   Filmmakers come together to write, shoot, edit, and premiere an original five-minute film in a mere 48 hours. At the start of the contest, teams are given the same three elements (a prop, a CHARACTER and a line of dialogue) which they must incorporate into their finished film.  To add to the challenge, each teams draws a genre from a hat (NEW GENRES WILL BE USED THIS FALL). Finished films that meet the deadline are judged on how well they incorporate the elements.   

 

Team leaders may register online or in person the day of the contest. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged.  Pre-register online at http://www.elff.com. Please read the Rules and Agreement and click on 48/5 Entry Form, to the left.  Please pay via Paypal (it's working now) or a check may be mailed to the address below or delivered the day of the contest.

Spring 48/5 Contest, May 20-22

The ELFF Spring 48/5 Contest takes place May 20-22, 2011

For the East Lansing Film Festival 48/5 Film Contest, filmmakers come together to write, shoot, edit, and premiere an original five-minute film in a mere 48 hours. At the start of the contest, teams will be given the same three elements: a prop, a location and a line of dialogue. They must incorporate these elements into their finished film to be eligible for an award. To add to the challenge, each teams draws a genre; drama, thriller, comedy or action.

The contest will begin with the distribution of elements, rules and regulations at 6:00 pm on Friday, May 20, at GONE WIRED CAFE, 2021 East Michigan Avenue, Lansing, MI. Doors will open at 5:00pm and all teams must be registered no later than 5:45 pm. Unregistered late teams will be disqualified. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

Completed films must be handed in on Sunday, May 22 by 6pm (and not a minute later) at GONE WIRED CAFE.

Prizes, made possible by the generous sponsorship of Cheeney Media Concepts 2, will be awarded for the top three films as decided by a panel of qualified judges drawn from the area.
