About the 48/5 Film Competition

At the East Lansing Film Festival 5/5  and 48/5 Film Contests, filmmakers come together to write, shoot, edit, and premiere an original five-minute film in the designated time period. These contests draw an exciting array of talented teams, including amateurs, professionals, students, and local film fanatics.

At the start of the contests, teams are given three specific elements they must incorporate into their finished film. To add to the challenge, each teams draws a genre from a hat. Finished films that meet the deadline are judged on how well they incorporate these elements.

Team leaders may register online or in person the day of the contest. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Unregistered late teams will be disqualified. The winners will also be shown at the East Lansing Film Festival in the Fall.

Spring 2009 48/5 Filmmaking Contest: February 6 - 8, 2009

When:
February 6 - 8, 2009

Where:
Beggar’s Banquet (Friday kickoff & Sunday film dropoff) & Monday, February 9, 2009 Public Screening Location TBD

For the eighth time in ELFF’s history (and our fourth time ever in the spring), filmmakers from the Mid-Michigan area will come together to write, shoot, edit, and premiere an original five-minute production in just 48 hours. At the start of the competition, participants are given specified elements to include in their film: a location, prop and line of dialogue. New this year, teams will have to draw a genre from among the following to be incorporated into their finished film: Comedy,
Drama, Horror, Road Movie, Romance, Sci-Fi, Spoof or Thriller.

ALL four of these elements must be incorporated into their film, and ALL production must occur during the allotted 48 hours.

ELFF Announces a Fall 48-5 Film Contest

Over one weekend, filmmaking teams have just 48 hours to make a 5-minute short film.

From beginning to end, all production, from scriptwriting to final credits, must take place within the designated time frame. At the start of the event, all the teams will be given the same theme ( i.e., "Time is of the essence") and different props, lines of dialogue and characters. All of these randomly selected elements must be evident in the finished film for the film to be eligible for an award.

The contest will begin with a kick-off meeting at 7:00 pm on Friday, November 3 at Room 103 South Kedzie Hall (on the corner of Farm Lane and Auditorium Road), Michigan State University and end at 7:00 pm on Sunday, November 5 at the same location.

Films received after the 7:00 pm deadline may be screened at ELFF's discretion but are not eligible for any awards. The winners will be announced the following Wednesday, November 8 at an Awards Party. The winning films will be shown and prizes will be handed out.

This fun, exhilarating contest is for anyone up to the challenge - for the casual or the professional filmmaker. The cost of registering is just $40 per team. Registration the day of the contest is $60 per team.

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Registration forms can be downloaded below and mailed with the fee to ELFF, PO Box 4880, East Lansing, MI 48826. Mailed forms must be received by November 1, 2006.  Registration at the kick-off meeting at South Kedzie Hall is permitted between 6:00 pm and 6:45 pm. The kick-off begins promptly at 7:00 pm. Late arrivers will be disqualified and their registration fee will not be returned.
