ART & CRAFT

Directed by Sam Cullman, Mark Becker, Jennifer Grausman,

89 minutes

Mark Landis, one of the most prolific art forgers in US history, has meticulously copied many styles and masters but doesn’t sell his paintings. He donates them to museums across the country fooling the experts. Yet Landis is a diagnosed schizophrenic whose elaborate con is also a means to cultivate connection and respect – feeding what he now understands as an outright “addiction to philanthropy.” This fascinating documentary is an unflinching exploration of life with mental illness and the universal need for community, appreciation, and purpose.

FORCE MAJEURE

Directed by Ruben Ostlund

120 minutes  IN Swedish with English subtitles

A critical favorite and word-of-mouth sensation at this year’s Cannes Festival, where it took the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard, this wickedly funny and precisely observed psychodrama tells the story of a model Swedish family who are on a skiing holiday in the French Alps. While having lunch at a mountainside restaurant, an avalanche sends the family and diners into a panic. The decisions made during this life-threatening event completely alter the family dynamics. A witty and unsettling satire on masculinity and morality.

On many Top Ten Films List of 2014.

KEEP ON KEEPIN’ ON

Directed by Alan Hicks
86 minutes

The East Lansing Film Festival Opening Night film and Audience Award winner for Best Documentary, KOKO is about the magic of music, the strength of survival and the generosity of mentorship. This is the remarkable story of the jazz legend Clark Terry, a living monument to the Golden Era of Jazz and mentor to Miles Davis and Quincy Jones among others. His newest protégé is Justin Kauflin, a 23-year old blind piano prodigy. We follow them over a five-year period as they face challenges with resilience and optimism. Very moving and inspirational.

LAST DAYS IN VIETNAM

Directed by Rory Kennedy

98 minutes

During the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War, the North Vietnamese Army closed in on Saigon as the panicked South Vietnamese people desperately attempted to escape. On the ground, American soldiers and diplomats confronted a moral quandary: whether to obey White House orders to evacuate only U.S. citizens or risk being charged with treason and save the lives of as many South Vietnamese citizens as they could. With time running out and the city under fire, an unlikely group of heroes emerged as Americans and South Vietnamese took matters into their own hands. Gripping, inspirational and important.
